Woods To Skip Quail Hollow

In a surprising move, considering his schedule in recent years, Tiger Woods has decided to skip the Wells Fargo Championship. The tournament will take place at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC May 2-5. Tiger won the tournament in 2007 but missed the cut in 2010 and 2012, his last two starts at the Wells Fargo, he missed the 2011 tournament due to injury. This is the only event on the PGA Tour in which Woods has missed two cuts in his career.

There is another potential layer to this story, thanks to Ian Poulter. He tweeted this at 7:43 pm EDT:

Crazy nine holes of golf. A 12 ball played with a few alcoholic beverages on the way round. I [hear] the greens at Quail Hollow are not good?

If this is true, although there have been no reports of this, it might not be surprising if several players drop Quail Hollow from their schedules. The tournament has become one of the upper-tier events on Tour, and the list of winners in the 10 previous years includes Rickie Fowler last year, Rory McIlroy in ’10, Woods in ’07, Jim Furyk in ’06, Vijay Singh in ’05 and David Toms in the inaugural event in 2003. The Quail Hollow Club will host the PGA Championship in 2017.
